The Blarney Stone

(The biggest tourist attraction in Ireland)

Many claim that by kissing the Blarney stone( limestone) you will inherit eloquence ( The gift of the gab). The stone which is believed to be half of the "Stone of Scone" was given to Cormac McCarthy by Robert the Bruce in 1314. It is said that the stone got it's special powers from a Witch who cast a spell deep within it, and afterwards she presented it to a King as a gift, in return for having saved her from drowning.

queue for Blarney stone

The actual Blarney stone in embedded in the top of the east side of the castles wall. In peak times there is usually many people waiting on their turn to kiss the stone, at such times it is not uncommon to be queueing for 1-2 hours.

If you look carefully, on the wall, to the left of the window facing you, you should see a "witch"like figure. she seems to be holding a "stone" in her hand !!

Close-up of Blarney stone

Lying on your back, and holding onto the metal bars allows you to get the required position for kissing the Blarney stone. An assistant ( photo) is always there, sitting beside you, to keep you right. Many years ago, it was much more dangerous as there were no protective bars to prevent you from falling 85 feet, down the side of the castle. The bars are fixed a few feet below the lying level and have pretty wide spaces in between. As you can imaging even today it wouldn't be a pleasant experience, should you slip.

A worms eye view!

This is a photo looking up the keeps wall to the Blarney stone in the middle.

Can you see the person getting into a kissing position?
